In my last blog, I discussed the insights that I received from having conversations with artists. It was very interesting to see that there was a major recurring theme where most of the well-established artists were not really keen on joining the NFT world. However, at these events, I met some young, not-so-well-known artists who were quite shy about their art and downplayed their level of creativity and talent. Despite this, the younger artists that I met during my exhibition visits were keener to explore the world of NFTs than the well-established older artists. 

CONCEPT

A PLATFORM & EXHIBITION 

Artists from diverse backgrounds now have access to the typically exclusive world and are able to monetize their art through NFT markets. 

However, through research, I have found out that many black artists are not aware of how to utilize this new technology and take full advantage of it. 

I am therefore creating an online (non-profit) website platform that will consist of the following;

  • Artists profile – For exposure and for promotion.  
  • Live 3D exhibition – That showcases the artists work
  • What’s on –  a list of relevant existing/upcoming exhibitions

NFT WORKSHOPS 

In addition to the platform, I also held workshops via zoom with the artists who were willing to participate. The main goal of the workshop was to start a dialogue about the struggles they go through as artists and teach them about NFTs. We covered topics such as minting, the effects of ethereum mining, sustainable NFTs, NFT marketplaces, and how to sell gas-free NFTs. 

Some of the practical activities during the workshop included uploading some of their artwork to Opensea.io. These art pieces will also be shown in the 3D exhibition.

REFLECTION

FEEDBACK

I conducted user testing in order to find out what artists thought of the platform. I asked what they thought of the concept and the whole idea in general and the main goal of this was to avoid creating another exploitative channel for the artists. 

During our tutorials on Thursday Alistair and Tiffany, both mentioned that they really loved the idea of having a workshop more than the platform. However, they did mention that the two ideas could intermarry but the workshop should take more precedence over the platform. 

I sat down with Mor and she advised me to have a specific focus group And to think about what the purpose is of these artists having the art on NFT platforms. Will this enhance their work, give them more exposure and make them go mainstream? How might having their artwork on NFT platforms affect them? Mor also mentioned that it would be great to be able to have great stories behind artworks and this was also echoed by John who suggested having an exhibition with socially/politically transformative messages.
